Plexiglas opal 2mm PMMA. Plexiglas is used as an alternative to glass. It has the following properties: -light: its density (1190 kg / m3) is approximately twice less than that of glass; - resistant to external influences (moisture, cold, etc.); - softer than glass and correspondingly more sensitive to scratches; - when heated above 100 ° C it becomes plastic and gives in to molding; - easily processed with metal-cutting and woodworking machines and tools; - perfectly cut and engraved with laser and cutter - transmits ultraviolet rays and X-rays, and filters infrared rays; transmits less light (92-93% vs. 99%) than glass; -is not resistant to organic solvents. In general, Plexiglas finds similar applications to those of glass, but is used in areas where its processing advantages, cost, effectiveness and light transmission are preferred. It is widespread in light industry, interior, advertising. Hard contact lenses for ophthalmology are made of polymethyl methacrylate.
